ESA vs. Therapy Animal vs. Service Dog

A therapy animal visits other people. It goes into hospitals, schools, care homes and disaster response settings with its handler, and it provides comfort to patients, students or residents — not to its owner. That is the opposite orientation from an emotional support animal, which exists to help the person it lives with.

Why This Matters for Registration

Therapy animal certification is the one genuine credential in the field, and its existence is part of why the ESA registration industry is plausible to newcomers. Organisations such as Pet Partners and Therapy Dogs International really do evaluate animals, really do register handler-and-animal teams, and really are recognized — by the hospitals and schools that invite them in.

But that recognition is contractual, not legal. A hospital admits a registered therapy team because it has an agreement with that organization, not because a law requires it. And none of it does anything for the handler’s own housing. A therapy dog registration will not waive a no-pet policy.

How to Get Your Animal Certified for Therapy Work

• Contact an established therapy animal organization and ask about their evaluation.
• Expect a temperament assessment, a handler component, and a health check.
• Expect insurance requirements and periodic re-evaluation.
• Understand it is volunteer work: you are offering your animal’s time to an institution.

It is genuinely worthwhile and completely separate from anything on the rest of this site. If your goal is to keep your animal in your apartment, you want an ESA letter instead.
