How to Register an Emotional Support Animal

You cannot — there is nowhere to register one. What people mean when they search this, and the five steps that produce the outcome they are after.

Direct answer

There is no registration process, because there is no registry.

If you searched this hoping to make your animal official so a landlord has to accept it, the process you want is different from the one you are picturing. It runs through a licensed healthcare provider and a written request to your housing provider. It takes longer than two minutes and it works.

How to Get an ESA in 5 Steps

Work out whether you meet the standard

The test is functional, not diagnostic: an impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. Sleep, concentration, working, caring for yourself and interacting with others all count. Our who qualifies section covers the nine conditions that come up most often and what a clinician assesses for each.

Find a provider licensed in your state

Your own therapist or physician is the best starting point, and costs nothing extra if you are already seeing them. If you are not in treatment, a telehealth evaluation works. Just check that the clinician is licensed in your state. A letter from an out-of-state provider is the most common reason a request gets rejected.

Account for a waiting period if you are in one of five states

Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana and Montana require an established relationship first. Plan for thirty days. Anyone offering you a same-day letter in those states is offering you a document their own state does not recognize.

Get the letter, and check it

License number, state they are licensed in, date, letterhead, a statement of disability without a diagnosis, a statement of need, the animal identified, a signature. Run through the requirements checklist before you send it anywhere.

Make the request in writing

This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that triggers the landlord’s legal duty. A letter sitting in your drawer does nothing. Six sentences, in writing, attaching the letter. Template on our accommodation request page.

Why People Still Search for ESA Registration

Because the alternative phrasing is unintuitive. Nobody’s first instinct is to search for “reasonable accommodation request under the Fair Housing Act”. They search for how to register the animal, because registering things is how official status usually works — vehicles, businesses, voters. Assistance animals are the exception, and the exception is not widely known.

Registries exist to catch that traffic. This site exists to catch the same traffic and tell you what to do instead.

What to Do If You Already Paid for Registration

Ask for a refund, particularly if the site told you registration was required — that is a misrepresentation. Then start at step one above. Nothing you have done makes the real route harder; you have only lost time and a fee. If the seller refuses and did make a legal claim, the FTC takes consumer complaints and so does your state attorney general.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I register my animal with the city or county?

Cities license pets, which is a different thing entirely and applies to all dogs regardless of status. A city dog license is not ESA registration and does not affect your accommodation request — though keeping it current is a good idea, because compliance with ordinary pet rules removes an argument from your landlord.

Is there a national database at all?

No national database of emotional support animals exists in any public or governmental form. Every database advertised as one is privately owned by the company selling entries in it.

How many animals can one letter cover?

There is no legal cap. A letter can name more than one animal if the clinician assesses a need for each. Housing providers look closely at multi-animal requests more closely, so the reasoning matters more.

Do I need to tell my landlord before I get the animal?

You can request an accommodation before or after acquiring the animal. Asking first is generally smoother, and it avoids a period where you are in breach of the lease while the request is pending.

Skip the Registry. Get a Real ESA Letter.

A clinician licensed in your state, a letter that meets the requirements, and a written request to your housing provider. That is the whole route.
